Educational
Activities
• The American Lung Association educational
initiative, Faces of Influenza, will be launched this fall to encourage
influenza vaccination among high-risk groups, such as those with
COPD and their caregivers. This campaign will also link to our Flu
Clinic Locator, offered as an online public service. It is the largest
interactive web of its kind, enabling individuals to find the most
convenient location to obtain a flu shot.
• We formed a new partnership with Lotsa Helping Hands, which
is a free, web-based caregiver support management system. This service
is being actively promoted around the country and it is available
to access at www.lungusa.org.
Research Activities
• The American Lung Association/COPD Foundation Partnership Research
Award in Bronchiectasis represents a funding partnership between
the COPD Foundation and the American Lung Association. The award, created
in 2006, provides funding for investigators focused on the treatment
or cure of bronchiectasis. The award will be for a maximum of $100,000
per year for a two year period.
Awareness Activities
• NHLBI Awareness Campaign: The Lung Association has committed
to be a full partner and 100% supporter of this campaign. We are
engaging the entire Lung
Association field and other organizations as partners to provide
grassroots support.
Advocacy Activities
• The Lung Association is advocating for Congress to increase
funding for biomedical, behavioral and environmental research and
research training, the public health infrastructure and health programs related
to the lung, including funding to find a cure and improve treatment
for those who suffer from COPD for FY 2007.
• The Lung Association is actively advocating for Pulmonary and
Cardiac Rehabilitation Act (S. 1440/HR 4824). Many lung disease patients
rely on Medicare to help pay for their medical care. Unfortunately,
due to a quirk in Medicare law, some Medicare patients do not have
access to proven, vital pulmonary rehabilitation therapy. As a result
of our COPD community’s advocacy campaign 23 Senators and 35
Representatives have signed on as cosponsors to support the pulmonary
rehabilitation bills which would create a specific pulmonary rehabilitation
category in the Medicare statue, therefore ensuring access to this
proven therapy for all Medicare beneficiaries.

State A.L.A.’s are key in providing information to patients
across the nation.
Everything Respiratory is dedicating several pages in each issue
to these
organizations so they can share past and upcoming activities with
patients.
